Electricity prices in Madagascar (JIRAMA)
The official residential grid in force: the kWh price per formula and per bracket, the fixed premiums and the standing charges, crossed with the exchange rate.
In Madagascar, residential JIRAMA electricity costs from 130 to 909 ariary per kWh depending on the formula (Social, Économique, Confort, Super Confort) and the monthly consumption bracket, before the fixed premium and the standing charge. The Optima grid has been in force since 04/06/2021, identical across zones 1, 2 and 3. Source: JIRAMA.

The grid, formula by formula
Four formulas by subscribed power. Energy is billed by monthly consumption bracket; the fixed premium (per subscribed kW) and the standing charge come on top.
Social
Tarif 10Subscribed power ≤ 2.2 kW
- Energy · bracket 1 (≤ 50 kWh/month)
- 130 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 2 (> 50 kWh/month)
- 764 Ar/kWh
- Standing charge
- 1,000 Ar/month
Économique
Tarif 20Subscribed power ≤ 3.3 kW
- Fixed premium
- 3,018 Ar/kW/month
- Energy · bracket 1 (< 130 kWh/month)
- 340 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 2 (130 to 300 kWh/month)
- 560 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 3 (> 300 kWh/month)
- 764 Ar/kWh
- Standing charge
- 8,000 Ar/month
Confort
Tarif 25Subscribed power ≤ 6.6 kW
- Fixed premium
- 3,140 Ar/kW/month
- Energy · bracket 1 (< 130 kWh/month)
- 370 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 2 (130 to 300 kWh/month)
- 600 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 3 (> 300 kWh/month)
- 909 Ar/kWh
- Standing charge
- 10,000 Ar/month
Super Confort
Tarif 40Subscribed power > 6.6 kW
- Fixed premium
- 6,141 Ar/kW/month
- Energy · bracket 1 (< 130 kWh/month)
- 440 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 2 (130 to 300 kWh/month)
- 600 Ar/kWh
- Energy · bracket 3 (> 300 kWh/month)
- 909 Ar/kWh
- Standing charge
- 15,000 Ar/month
In the grid in force, values are identical across tariff zones 1, 2 and 3.
Prepaid meters use the same grid (same formulas, Tarif 10 to Tarif 40).
Which formula for which meter?
The formula follows the meter's subscribed power: Social up to 2.2 kW, Économique up to 3.3 kW (15 A), Confort up to 6.6 kW (up to 30 A), Super Confort above. Amperage is indicative; the subscribed power is printed on the bill.
The monthly bill adds three parts: the energy consumed, billed by bracket; the fixed premium, proportional to the subscribed power (the Social formula has none); and the flat standing charge.
Example bill
A Social subscriber using 40 kWh in the month: 40 kWh × 130 Ar = 5,200 Ar of energy, plus the 1,000 Ar standing charge.
6,200 Ar ≈ 1.46 USD
Fully determined by the grid: consumption inside bracket 1 and no fixed premium on Social. Before any taxes.
Method and source
The tariffs shown are JIRAMA's official residential grid (the Optima plan), transcribed from the documents the utility publishes and checked against the applied-tariff record of the ORE (the electricity regulator). A grid stays in force until the next revision; we watch the sources daily and record each revision at its effective date. Indicative, non-contractual data.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the price of a kWh of electricity in Madagascar?
- There is no single price: the kWh depends on the formula (Social, Économique, Confort, Super Confort) and the monthly consumption bracket. The span in force and the full grid are at the top of this page, with their effective date.
- Is prepaid electricity priced differently?
- No. Prepaid meters apply the same Optima grid as postpaid: same formulas (Tarif 10 to Tarif 40), same brackets, same standing charges.
- What are the fixed premium and the standing charge?
- The fixed premium is a monthly amount proportional to the subscribed power (in ariary per kW). The standing charge is a flat monthly amount per subscription. Both come on top of the energy consumed; the Social formula has no fixed premium.
- Will JIRAMA tariffs go up?
- Upward revisions have been announced under the utility's recovery plan, from October 2026 for some customer categories. This page publishes the grid in force; each revision will be recorded at its effective date, which is what builds the tariff history.
